Brake Village Sri Siva Soobramaniar Alayam recently marked its 117th Panguni Uthiram Kavady, drawing hundreds of Hindu devotees in a powerful and moving display of faith and devotion.
The sacred procession transformed the route to the temple into a vibrant tapestry of colour and fragrance, as the air filled with the scent of marigolds and incense, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of bhajans, drums, and cymbals that echoed throughout the festival. Devotees undertook acts of penance and thanksgiving, carrying kavady and paal kodam, pulling chariots, and performing body piercings as expressions of deep spiritual commitment.
Panguni Uthiram, a significant Tamil Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Muruga, commemorates divine unions and symbolises devotion, sacrifice, and the fulfilment of vows.
In preparation for the festival, devotees observe a period of strict fasting, prayer, and meditation over several days, showing unwavering spiritual discipline and devotion over the Easter weekend.
Some devotees pulled chariots, which symbolise the ceremonial procession of Lord Murugan, allowing him to visit the community and receive offerings. Pulling the chariot represents supreme devotion, humility, and the surrender of one’s ego, while offering a way for devotees to repay vows, seek divine guidance, and bear the effort of spiritual burdens.
Staunch devotees often pull chariots attached to their skin with hooks as an act of severe sacrifice and penance. This act symbolises the burden of sins or problems being carried by the Lord, helping the devotee overcome challenges.

To all the devoted souls who carried their kavadies, paal kodams, and pulled small chariots—may Lord Murugan accept your sacrifices, your prayers, and your unwavering faith. We pray that your journey was filled with strength, peace, and divine blessings, and that His grace continues to guide and protect you always.”
