A martial arts dojo in Verulam has made international headlines following a monumental victory at the 10th International India Challengers Cup.
Led by Chief Instructor Shihan Rodney Nair, the contingent from Verulam travelled to Kolkata, India, to test their skills against world-class competitors.
The event, hosted by Seishinkai Shitoryu Karate-Do Chairman of the Referee Commission in India and World Karate Federation (WKF) referee, is recognised as the largest karate tournament in India.
The three-day spectacle was staggering in scale, drawing approximately 7 500 athletes competing across 23 tatamis, with more than 50 competitors battling in almost every division.
Despite the intense international field, the Verulam squad delivered a masterclass in discipline, skill and determination, returning home with an extraordinary haul of nine gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
Among the standout performances was an inspiring comeback by Saras Chinsamy, who stepped back onto the competitive tatami after 30 years to capture gold in the female master kata division.
Twelve-year-old Mohammed Aayaan Naby also performed outstandingly, winning double gold in the kumite and kata divisions. Shihan Nair set the ultimate benchmark for his students by winning gold in the male master kata division.
“I am extremely proud of every single student’s performance,” said Shihan Nair following the team’s victorious return. “Competing at this level takes relentless preparation, but our hard work truly paid off. Bringing these medals back home to Verulam proves that local dedication can stand tall on the global stage. The team’s overwhelming success has solidified the dojo’s reputation as a centre for martial arts excellence in KwaZulu-Natal.”
