Stranger who rescued trapped woman at Delfi finally identified

The mystery man who risked his life to rescue a woman trapped inside Delfi during Thursday’s devastating fire has been found.

As flames engulfed the Durban restaurant, he took off his shirt, had water poured over himself and ran inside after learning that someone was still trapped.

Maria’s sister was inside.

He managed to get her out safely before disappearing into the chaos.

Now, the family can finally thank the stranger whose actions helped save her life.

But their ordeal is far from over.

The fire has left the family without a home and many of their belongings. They are currently staying with friends and relatives, along with their two dogs, who escaped unharmed.

Their beloved parrot did not survive the blaze.

The family is now making plans to open a GoFundMe account to help them rebuild. Donations from members of the public will be welcomed.

Ward 27 councillor Ernest Smith has urged residents to rally behind Maria and Doddy and help restore Delfi, which has been part of the Morningside/Windermere community for decades.

Smith said he seldom asks the community to donate money, but Delfi has held a special place in his heart for many years.

“For me — and for many people who support Maria and Doddy — today’s fire comes as a shock and requires us as a community to stand and help one of our own,” Smith said.

He appealed to residents to share the family’s appeal and assist in restoring Delfi to what it was.

“Each donation helps get them back on their feet,” he said.

Delfi was gutted in the blaze, leaving a much-loved Durban landmark devastated.

Amid the loss, one extraordinary act of courage stands out.

He saw someone trapped inside a burning building — and went in.

Now, he has finally been found.

This is a developing story. More details to follow.
