Members of non-profit organisation, Clean Surf Project in collaboration with a group of volunteers recently held successful beach clean-ups at Illovo Beach and Rivermouth to conclude Mandela month.
The Clean Surf Project spokesperson, Romy Wentzel said, “In honour of our South African iconic Nelson Mandela we engaged with community members to remove debris at Illovo Beach and Rivermouth caused by the disastrous floods which occurred in April 2022.”
Wentzel added that numerous beaches are still polluted which has inspired daily clean-up programmes.
“This was one of many clean-up operations as we have had teams on the ground from Monday to Friday as from the beginning of May up to date. At the moment, teams are busy with dune rehabilitation at Amanzimtoti Main Beach by separating plastic waste from sticks and trees that washed up after the April floods,” Wentzel added.
She added that residents and business owners are encouraged to participate in upcoming clean-ups and educational presentations about recycling.
“The Clean Surf Project team together with South Coast residents have collected more than 60000kg of plastic and general waste stretching from Dakota Beach to Illovo Beach. We would appreciate any form of support or funding to extend the environmental service and to continue to create employment,” said Wentzel.
