The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Amanzimtoti, which has been a beacon of hope for countless vulnerable animals, is currently facing an unprecedented financial crisis and is appealing to the public for help.

According to Stacey Wall, SPCA volunteer, despite the SPCA’s best efforts, last year’s loss of R317 196 has drained their reserves, leaving them unable to meet the expenses of the upcoming month.

“We believe that every animal, no matter how big or small, deserves a life free from pain, hunger and distress. For over 30 years, our doors have remained open, ready to accept any animal into our care. We never turn away an animal in need.

“Our mission extends far beyond providing shelter and food to homeless animals; it is about preventing cruelty through education and ensuring that animals are protected in accordance with the Animal Protections Act. For many animals, we are the only thing standing between them and a life of suffering,” said Wall.

She said the challenging time that the organisation is facing threatens to jeopardise everything that they have built.

“While we were anticipating some relief from the municipal grant, unfortunately we are still awaiting the pay-out. This pay-out is also set to be significantly less than in previous years. Additionally, recent challenges such as the theft of our van, the ongoing repercussions of the pandemic and devastating flooding, have all taken a toll on our financial stability.”

Wall said that every month, expenses exceed the SPCA’s income which has resulted in depleted funds to cover any expenses for the future.

“We are committed to being a voice for the voiceless, and for that, we need your support. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a significant difference. We understand that times are currently tough for many, but we believe that the kindness and generosity of the human spirit can overcome any obstacle.

“Please help us to continue the vital work we do, as animals cannot speak for themselves. They rely on us and we can’t let them down,” pleaded Wall. For more information on how to help, contact Toti SPCA on 031-904-2424.
