Muslims from all across the globe are gearing up for the holy month of Ramadaan which is expected to begin this week. Ramadaan is observed every year during the ninth month of the lunar calendar for approximately 30 days, depending on the sighting of the new moon.
It marks the month that the Quran was revealed to the Prophet (PBUH). Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and mandatory for all able-bodied Muslims. The holy month is marked with fasting, additional prayers as well as charity. Zohra Cassimjee, 69, of Westcliff, said she is praying for a blessed Ramadaan for all. “My prayer is that this Ramadaan comes through nicely and that our community fasts while keeping those we have lost in mind. Last year, it was a tragic time and there was so much of loss due to the Covid-19 pandemic so this year we will try to do our best while observing this fast, God-willing,” said Cassimjee. Cassimjee will be turning 70 this August and prays that God-willing, she surpasses this fast to reach her milestone birthday celebration.
Her daughter, 47-year-old Rehana Khan, said she looks forward to having her family with her this year during this holy month. “Last year just showed us how much the absence of family impacts one’s life. After years of observing ‘Iftar’ together with everyone, we could not engage as a family due to the pandemic. This year we hope to be able to celebrate Eid with our families because we really missed it last year. We had to relive the happy memories to get us through last year and we are eager to make better memories this year,” she said.
This Ramadaan, Khan urged the community to keep those who are ill in their prayers as well as the families of those who lost their battle with Covid-19. “On behalf of our family, we appeal to the community to stay safe during this holy month. Keep everyone in your prayers and if you are in the position to help someone, do not hesitate. In these difficult economic times, it is important for us to share what we have and assist those who need it,” said Khan.
