The building of a church in just 34 days is nothing short of a miracle for the non-profit organisation, the Time is Now.
From breaking ground at the start of March to handing over the keys on Good Friday, 2 April, the construction of the Welbedacht-based Convent of Hope Ministries church, has been a blessing to both the congregants, who worshipped there in Easter, and the community who will benefit in the long-term. Pastor Selvan Govender, President of the NPO, said the R300 000 church will also double as an events venue and a multi-functional community centre. “I want to place on record my sincere gratitude to my executive committee team made up of Kogie Moodley, Kishore Ambapersadh and Sashen of ANS Electrical for their sacrifices. The team, together with many sponsors, who gave freely to this cause, made it possible for us to reach the deadline of opening the church building on Good Friday.”
Pastor Brandon Bhagothiparsad said it was an extremely exciting and joyous time for him and the church. “The vision that God placed in my heart is unfolding. The church is not just for services and spiritual uplifting, but will also be used to service some of the needs of the community. While the purpose of the church is to bring hope, peace, reassurance and joy to the people and contrary to the mindset created over the years, it is not just for the Christian community. Covenant of Hope Ministries was built with that in mind. People need hope and not just with the preaching of the gospel, but also in everyday living.”
Bhagothiparsad said the church is the start of what will become a drug rehabilitation centre and will also be used for the Welbedacht Recreation and Education Centre (WREC) which was launched recently. Govender added that it was a humbling experience knowing that sponsorship and assistance was provided by individuals of different religious backgrounds as well, proving that humanity knows no boundaries and was not limited to any barriers.
“We laid the foundation at the start of March and it was extremely humbling to see what a difference a community working together can make,” he said. The handing-over ceremony was witnessed by 50 guests including 10 pastors from the area. Guests were treated to a glorious praise, worship and word service along with entertainment thereafter and a sumptuous supper. Govender, who is also the area manager of the IFP in Chatsworth, said that ‘The Time Is Now’ has embarked on many projects and that they are willing to assist the community and other organisations who are in need.
