South African peace activist and former politician Ela Gandhi was also present at the protest, calling for peace, unity and an end to the confrontation.
Gandhi said she did not support the actions of March and March, arguing that the presence of refugees on the pavement outside the Department of Home Affairs Refugee Reception Centre was linked to events that occurred before the July 30 march.
According to Gandhi, some refugees were forced onto the pavement after they were allegedly chased away by members of the organisation, while others left voluntarily because they feared for their safety.
Gandhi called for dialogue between the parties and urged those involved to seek a peaceful resolution rather than further confrontation.
