In celebration of Ashura 2022, a day which is observed every year on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Muharram, the Westville-based non-profit organisation, Tiny Steps Care Team distributed meals to disadvantaged communities.
On this day, Muslims are encouraged to extend their generosity to family, friends and community members.
The distribution was made possible through the organisation’s second year partnership with local charity organisations, Muslims for Humanity, Willowton Group, Capital Group and Natal Meman Jamaat (NMJ). The distribution areas include orphanages and homes for intellectually impaired.
Tiny Steps Care Team founder, Naadia Sheik-Hammeed thanked the organisations and partners for making the day possible.
“More than 7 500 meals were distributed to the people of KwaZulu-Natal. Through our partners and donors, we were able to feed people in areas which include Springfield, Asherville, Phoenix, Shongweni and Molweni. We are extremely proud of this partnership that has benefited underprivileged communities with nutritional meals. May the Almighty accept and reward every person involved in the distribution of the much-needed meals,” said Sheik-Hameed.
Spokesperson for Muslims for Humanity, Mohammed Kaka said that the initiative began in 2020 in the province when 50 000 meals were distributed by a group of organisations.
“In 2021, it became a national event. Food is being prepared and cooked in different areas. Distribution has been pre-arranged between all the organisations taking part and will focus on areas with informal settlements where the need is often the greatest. Well planned logistics will ensure that there is no overlap and that a maximum number of people can be reached,” said Kaka.
