The Greenwood Park Community Policing Forum (CPF) crime awareness event that was held on Saturday, 13 August, proved to be a day of fun and unity as local law enforcement were joined by security companies and community members in an effort to help curb crime in the area.
Greenwood Park CPF chairperson, Charles Naidoo said the event was a notable success thanks to the SAPS and the CPF bringing all the role players together as part of an awareness campaign aimed at both formal and informal residents.
The day started off with an exciting show by the SAPS marching band followed by a thrilling Motorcade. Community members was in for a treat thanks to a demonstration by the Natal German Shepherd’s and the Youth Desk also performed an informative self defence lesson followed by a hijacking simulation by Marshall Security.
Emer-G-Med joined security partners Blue Security as well as Netcare911 in a demonstration showcasing how multidisciplinary teams operate on the scene of a serious motor vehicle collision. A volunteer patient was placed into a wrecked vehicle which was donated by Nettow, and paramedics responded to the scene as if it were a real life event.
The eThekwini Fire and Rescue services used specialised hydraulic equipment including the Jaws-of-life to cut the patient free, demonstrating their talents to the crowd whilst paramedics carefully extricated the young lady to an awaiting ambulance.
Chairperson of the CPF Sub Forum 2 Youth Desk Ashlin Ellan said: “After almost two and a half years of a pandemic, the community looked forward to an event of this nature to come out and more importantly with the various SAPS departments, security companies and law enforcement officials present, it instils the hope of safety in the people to come out and bond together.”
He added that the organisers are looking forward to hosting more events such as this, on a much larger scale. Youth Desk member, Muhammad Shaik, said events like these reassures the community that they have someone to turn to in times of need.
