Charges of attempted robbery and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm were opened at the Boston Police Station after a 63-year-old man was attacked and stabbed on his farm in Boston, Midlands, on Wednesday, 17 November.
SAPS Colonel Thembeka Mbele said that the victim was accosted by an armed man. “The suspect stabbed the victim and demanded safe keys. He fled the scene when he heard the victim calling for help. Nothing was taken and the victim was taken to a local hospital for medical attention,” said Col Mbele.
KZN Spokesperson on Agriculture and Rural Development, Martin Meyer, MPL for Democratic Alliance (DA), has strongly condemned the attack on the Midlands farmer, bringing the total number of farm attacks in the province to four in just 10 days.
“Regrettably, with the festive season around the corner, it is likely that such incidents will be on the rise,” said Meyer, who called upon, KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala, Agriculture MEC, Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, and the Provincial Police Commissioner, to act now.
“The province’s rural communities can no longer be left at the mercy of criminals. No arrests have been made and the Midlands farmer is recovering in hospital. The DA extends its best wishes for a speedy recovery to both him and his family and we also call for the trauma counselling they will need. At this stage, no arrests have been made and the attempted murderers are out on the streets. The DA trusts that SAPS will put every effort into finding the perpetrators and bringing them to book.”
