Three suspects appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s court, on 1 February, after being arrested and charged with copper theft.
Captain Jerome Slater, spokesperson for the Greenwood Park SAPS said that a member of Marshall Security and member of Prasa protection service intercepted three males carrying a black plastic bag exiting the railway line at the intersection of North Coast Road and Mimosa Road, Greenwood Park.
“On noticing the members they tried to evade them but they managed to secure them. On inspection of the black plastic bag, about 25 meters of Transnet cables was discovered and they had no reasonable explanation for it,” he said.
Slater said that the three men aged between 28 and 36 were placed under arrest and handed over to Greenwood Park Police together with the evidence found in their possession. “They were detained for being in possession of suspected stolen property and appeared in Durban Magistrate’s court on 1 February. Detectives have profiled the three and are trying to link them to other cases. The value of property is about R5000,” he added.
Meanwhile in another case, members of Greenwood Park crime prevention under the supervision of Captain Govinden received information of drug dealing in Firewood Road. According to Slater, a male, 28, was noticed exchanging items with people. “Giving them sufficient reasons they sent under cover officers to purchase drugs and once the transaction was done, intercepted the drug dealer and on searching him found 20 small plastic wrappings containing cocaine and one plastic wrapping containing crystal meth. The suspect was arrested for dealing in crack cocaine and crystal meth. He was charged accordingly and profiled and also appeared in court on the same day,” said Slater.
