As part of their ongoing fight against substance abuse among the youth of Tongaat, the Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society hosted the Teenagers Against Drug Abuse (TADA) Conference on Wednesday, 15 April.
In partnership with SANCA Durban, 105 pupils were trained over two days as TADA Marshals to support their peers and promote drug-free lifestyles in their schools. The initiative aims to empower learners to become active leaders in the prevention of substance abuse within their educational environments.
Participating schools included Fairbreeze Combined School, Tongaat Secondary School, Nkosibomvu Secondary School, Buffelsdale Secondary School, Belverton Secondary School, and Seatides Combined School.
General Manager and Social Work Manager at the Tongaat Child Welfare, Jo Moodley, said: “A big thank you to SANCA-Durban, all principals, educators, and pupils for their commitment to building a drug-free Tongaat.”
The welfare society added: the success of the conference highlights the importance of peer-to-peer support systems. A representative noted: by training these marshals, the community is creating a sustainable network of young advocates who are equipped to handle the challenges of substance abuse at a grassroots level.
