The scourge of gender-based violence, domestic abuse and bullying that has left many households either depressed or grieving for their loved ones, was recently tackled by the Nguwe Wedwa Youth Development Organisation in the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
The region has, over the years, been plagued gruesome murders of women and children and seen an increase in rape cases which have become a concern. The recent event, centred on educating misinformed youth, was attended KZN artists, by uMlazi SAPS, religious figures and officials from the Department of Community Safety and Liaison. Nguwe Wedwa founder and CEO, Mbongeleni Mzimela, said the campaign uses various forms of art to convey a strong message in handling negative circumstances and social ills. “Although we usually deal with youth, we’re also encouraging retired community members to use their artistic talent, or learn some, to show youth a better way in addressing social ills. This also extends to HIV and Aids, Covid-19 and unemployment distracting youth.”
A man of immense faith, Mzimela thanked all those who attended the youth development presentation which they can continue through support from community leaders. “In uMlazi D-section, we’ve implemented this campaign through art and under the leadership of Comrade Nomthandazo Shabalala who has been blessing Nguwe Wedwa, since 2019, in the struggle of community development. The eThekwini Municipality has also partnered with us as we grow from strength to strength and give thanks.” In addition, the youth development is currently organising their annual ‘Nguwe Wedwa Rise And Shine Talent Search Auditions’, which were delayed by Covid, but is promised to be as entertaining and humbling as always.
