Bergville Police will be investigating an inquest, after a severely decomposed body was found in a municipal drain on Saturday, 22 May. Okhahlamba Fire Department Chief Freddie Halgreen was called by Bergville SAPS to assist with the recovery of the body.
“The details around how the body had gotten into the drain is unknown and police will conduct their investigation,” said Halgreen.
Halgreen called for the Newcastle K9 SAR to assist. A member of the community followed up on a rotten smell coming from the area and on closer inspection found the unknown man.
“The smell was unbearable and after the discovery was made I immediately informed Okhahlamba service and Bergville police,” said the witness.
Officials on the scene used a rope rescue system to lower a police official into the drain. The official placed the body inside a bodybag and with the rope system, lifted the body from the drain.
