There was mayhem on the M4 Highway and in Rossburgh after two hijackers held up a female motorist at gunpoint and crashed the vehicle before they were arrested by the Metro Police Dog Unit on South Coast Road.
Brighton Beach SAPS media liaison officer, Captain Louise Le Roux said it was alleged that the victim was in her vehicle at the M4 off-ramp, to Bluff, when she was approached by two unknown individuals who were both armed. “They took her motor vehicle and drove towards Bluff Road and then towards South Coast Road. Authorities were alerted and pursued the vehicle. The hijacked vehicle collided with another vehicle and then ploughed into a fence and stalled.” Le Roux said two suspects were arrested and two firearms were recovered at the scene. “Both the serial numbers were filed off. Upon further investigation, it was established that the suspects hijacked a RTT truck carrying goods in the Greenwood Park area. The bakkie that was used by the suspects when they hijacked the truck was parked near the truck in Pinedene Road. The suspects came to this area to offload the truck, however, security officers came to Pinedene Road and tried to intercept the suspects. The suspects fled. There were five suspects in total.”
According to police, the bakkie was hijacked from KwaMashu a few weeks before from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health. “The suspects fired shots at the security in Pinedene Road. A case of attempted murder is being registered in Umbilo. Two firearms were found in the hijacked bakkie that was abandoned in Pinedene Road with serial numbers also filed off.” The two suspects arrested on South Coast Road face charges of carjacking, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and theft of motor vehicle. Police said the investigation is still ongoing and that informers have been activated. PT Alarms spokesperson, Dhevan Govindasamy, said their tactical unit members were also on-scene and came under fire from the hijacking gang on Pinedene Road in Rossburgh, prior to the South Coast Road hijacking. “it is alleged that the suspects hijacked the truck and abducted the driver and crew as well. PT Tactical members recovered a white Hilux bakkie on-scene and a firearm was seized. The truck driver and crew were treated on-scene by PT Ambulance paramedics for minor injuries after they were assaulted and throttled by the suspects. Police investigations are underway.”
Metro Police spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad, commended the arresting officers from the Metro K9 Unit. “The Metro Police officers were involved in a high-speed chase and ensured that they remained on the tail of the suspects keeping the suspects under pressure therefore leading to the crash. The metro officers did well in arresting the suspects and seizing the firearms. A clear message is sent out to fleeing suspects that they will be caught. As Metro Police, we will ensure that we will pull out all the stops to arrest suspects who think they can play games with the law and law enforcement officers.”
