A nail-bitting arrest of two suspects in Cornubia was recently all residents could talk about, after the suspect fled to the roof of one of the houses.
In a movie-like scene, Verulam detectives were conducting a search for the suspects after the detectives were issued a warrant of arrest for the two men, suspected for housebreaking. Communications officer for the South African Police Department in Verulam, Captain Henry Kisten said: “Both the suspects noticed the police arrive and began to flee the area. The suspects then climbed a roof to evade the officers.”
Constable Govender, from the community service centre, and Detective Constable Phiri went up the roof and arrested both the suspects. “When the suspects were brought down they resisted being handcuffed and tried fighting back, however, the two were eventually handcuffed and both suspects were detained for resisting arrest and their warrant of arrests.” Kisten said the community of Cornubia praised the police for their acts of bravery. Verulam Station Commander, Brigadier Dludla together with his team commended Constable Govender and Detective Constable Phiri for their dedication and acts of bravery for climbing up a high wall onto the roof and ensuring both the suspects were arrested as they were wanted suspects who committed a serious crime.
