The KwaXimba community, in the Outer West of Durban, has received a significant boost following the official handover of a new computer centre on Wednesday, 22 April 2026.

The initiative, spearheaded by Metro FM in partnership with the Icebolethu Foundation and the eThekwini Municipality, forms part of the build-up to the 2026 Metro FM Music Awards (MMA26), which return to the city this weekend.

The awards ceremony is set to take place at the Durban International Convention Centre on Saturday, 25 April, with a series of entertainment events and public activations expected to take place at People’s Park Durban over the weekend.

Situated in Ward 1, Cato Ridge, the newly launched centre aims to bridge the digital divide by providing access to computers, internet connectivity and essential digital skills to learners and residents.

Speaking at the handover and live beroadcast, Metro FM Head of Programme, Siyanda Phelelaphi, said the project is designed to open doors for young people in underserved communities.
“Our aim is to ensure that the youth in this community have access to computers and the internet, where they can complete schoolwork, learn new skills and become familiar with the digital world,” she said.

Ward councillor Thembo Ntuli described the handover as a landmark moment for KwaXimba.
“As eThekwini, we are committed to working with the private sector and organisations that understand the needs of our communities. This centre will make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people of Ward 1. It is a historical development that will be remembered in KwaXimba,” he said.

A local school teacher welcomed the initiative, highlighting its importance for learners with limited exposure to technology.
“Many of our primary school learners have never used a computer before. This centre will equip them with essential skills such as sending emails and conducting research, which will benefit them as they progress to high school and beyond,” the teacher said.

Group Chief Executive Officer of Icebolethu, Dr Nomfundo Mcoyi-Zondo, said the facility will also serve the broader community.
“This WiFi-enabled centre will assist not only learners, but also community members who need access to online platforms, including those applying for employment,” she said.

She added that the project forms part of a wider rollout of similar centres in underprivileged and rural areas across KwaZulu-Natal, including Nquthu, Nkandla, Mthwalume and Mbazwana.

Municipal leadership further noted that the initiative complements other youth development programmes supported by the foundation, including coding academies, robotics training and empowerment camps for young women.

For KwaXimba residents, the centre represents more than just access to technology — it is a gateway to opportunity in an increasingly digital world, as Durban once again takes centre stage for one of the country’s premier music events.
