Term Two has begun with renewed energy at the ReStory Foundation, as its wide range of developmental programmes resumes in full force. Designed to nurture the whole child, these initiatives extend far beyond academics, equipping young people with the tools they need to thrive.
Phumlani Zungu, the organisation’s Hub Manager in Bhambayi, believes that central to the foundation’s work are life skills lessons that help children strengthen their identity, build a sense of belonging, and develop resilience in the face of trauma. Zungu said: “We are intentional about creating spaces where children feel seen, heard, valued and empowered. From this base of support, they begin to see themselves as capable contributors to their communities.”
Complementing this are programmes in coding and robotics, dance, art, homework club, puzzle and games club, and the recent addition of rugby: each offering opportunities for creativity, discipline, and teamwork. A standout success is the weekly Maths Club, which now attracts more than 450 learners. Supported by over 50 volunteer tutors from Durban Girls’ College and Maris Stella School, the club has become a vibrant hub of learning and relationship-building.

Beyond the classroom, the foundation continues to invest in families. A recent parenting workshop brought caregivers together to explore how their own adverse childhood experiences may be shaping their parenting. Sessions like these have proven transformative, fostering more self-aware, connected, and emotionally safe homes.
This growth, however, has brought new challenges: the right kind of challenges. With programmes expanding and attendance at an all-time high, space has become a critical constraint. According to Danny Tennet, Operations Manager at the foundation, plans are already underway to build a dedicated training centre. Tennet explains: “We’ve seen incredible early support, with almost a third of the funding committed even before formal fundraising began. Now we’re calling on partners to help bring this vision to life.”
As momentum builds, the ReStory Foundation stands poised to deepen its impact. For more information on how to partner with its growth, interested parties can contact the team at admin@restoryfoundation.co.za.
