A case that shocked residents of Durban has finally reached closure, with one of the accused sentenced to 22 years imprisonment for the brutal murder of a woman on the N2 freeway under the Wandsbeck Road bridge in the Clare Estate area.
The incident dates back to 23 December 2023, when a case of robbery and murder was opened at South African Police Service Sydenham after an African female was violently killed.
A meticulous investigation led by Detective Sergeant Ebrahim Sheik resulted in the arrest of four African males on 30 December 2023. The matter was placed on the court roll at the Durban Magistrate’s Court, where bail was opposed as the investigation continued.
Over time, the case progressed through the courts, with trial proceedings set for April 2025 against the main accused — identified as the driver and the person directly linked to the murder.
On 15 April 2026, the matter returned to court for trial, where witnesses were present and co-accused were prepared to testify against him. However, before proceedings advanced, the accused informed his legal representative of his decision to plead guilty, opting to abandon trial.
The matter was finalised on Friday, 17 April 2026, when sentencing was handed down.
The court imposed a total sentence of 46 years imprisonment, comprising:
• Count 1: Robbery — 12 years
• Count 2: Robbery — 12 years
• Count 3: Murder — 22 years

The sentences will run concurrently, meaning the accused will serve an effective 22 years behind bars. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Police have praised the breakthrough, highlighting the dedication of Detective Sergeant Ebrahim Sheik, whose investigation ensured that those responsible were brought before the law.
Authorities continue to urge members of the public to assist investigations by reporting criminal activity to Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or Sydenham SAPS on 031 321 4452.
The case stands as a firm reminder that even the most brutal crimes will eventually meet the weight of justice.
