The Consulate General of India in Durban had the honour of hosting the world champion Indian National Women’s Cricket Team at India House on Saturday, 18 April. The reception served as a warm welcome for the team as they participate in a high-stakes five-match T20 series against South Africa.
The champions arrived to a sparkling high tea held in their honour, greeted by the vibrant singing and dancing of the Surialanga Dance Company. The prestigious event was attended by various dignitaries, including anti-apartheid stalwart and social activist Ela Gandhi, Consulate General of India in Durban Niteen Subhash Yeola, and the Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Narend Singh.
During the proceedings, Yeola praised the team for their consistent efforts on the global stage and extended his best wishes for their upcoming World Cup campaign later this year.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed that it was a significant honour for the team to visit South Africa, particularly noting Durban’s deep historical ties with India.

Kaur said: “It is an honour for the team to be in South Africa, especially in Durban, with its strong historic ties with India. We are determined to bounce back after losses in the first two matches at Kingsmead and will endeavour to play better in the remaining games.”
The series has proven challenging for the visiting side. The Indian women’s cricket team lost the opening match against South Africa by six wickets on Friday, 17 April. The hosts further extended their lead to 2-0 on Sunday, 19 April, defeating the world champions by eight wickets.
