
The community of Tongaat are still reeling in shock following the death of a learner who was mowed down by a taxi outside the school gates, on Friday.
On social media, residents expressed their condolences, to both the family of the deceased and the school. Chinky Narayansamy said, “OMG how heart breaking for the family, and on the last day of school, RIP my child.” While Gail Stefano said “Taxi drivers have no feelings, they just want to line their back pockets. Hope one of the passengers comes forward and report him. Condolences to the family”.(sic)
According to first responders, IPSS Medical Rescue, the incident occurred early Friday morning. IPSS spokesperson, Paul Herbst, said paramedics responded to reports of an accident outside of a school in Tongaat. “On arrival, paramedics established that a child, approximately 10 years old, had been struck by a taxi, which proceeded to flee the scene. The child sustained critical head injuries and required immediate intervention. An extensive and prolonged advanced life support resuscitation was undertaken and paramedics worked feverently to revive the child. Unfortunately, following an extensive attempt to resuscitate the child, paramedics declared the patient dead.” Witnesses to the accident have been asked to come forward.
