Businesses in the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast are already looking forward to rebuilding following successful clean-up operations which saw the community unite against the vandalising and destruction of property.
The leadership, Umdoni community, business sector and municipal employees came out in numbers to clean up Umzinto, last week. The team also took on the mammoth task of cleaning the local taxi rank, streets and numerous shops in the area. Umdoni mayor, Sibongile Khathi, thanked those who were part of the clean-up campaign. “The commitment shown today is a clear indication that the Umdoni community wants to move forward and rebuild. “The area of Umzinto was heavily affected by the acts of criminality witnessed last week. We also met with the business sector to figure out a way forward, the clean-up was just the first step of the recovery programme.” Like most parts of KZN affected by the looting, there were a number of buildings vandalised and torched during the unrest. This included the Ilovu Youth Centre, under the Department of Social Development (DSD), which was also cleaned last week by volunteers and employees.
