It was a tragic start to the week as three people died in a horrific accident on the M4 South near the Clairwood off-ramp after 5am yesterday.
Advanced life support paramedic, Garrith Jamieson, said that their team arrived on the scene only to “find total carnage”. “It is alleged that the vehicle had broken down with a flat tyre and while the three men were changing the tyre a truck collided into the vehicle and the men. The men, believed to be in their thirties, sustained major injuries. There was nothing more that paramedics could do for them. They were declared deceased on the scene. The truck driver was uninjured in the collision,” said Jamieson.
Brighton Beach police communications officer Captain Louise Le Roux, said that they are investigating a case of culpable homicide. “It is alleged that a car had broken down. The first truck swerved to avoid colliding with the static vehicle that had broken down. Another truck approached and was not able to swerve out timeously thus resulting in knocking the occupants who were static outside the vehicle.
“No emergency triangle was found on scene by SAPS, it was also indicated by the driver that there was no emergency triangle indicating that a vehicle had broken down on the freeway. The incident occurred at approximately 4.55am, before sunrise,” said Le Roux.
