Scottburgh Lifesaving Club (SLC) and Nippers have been showing up the competition during the Nippers Championships at Addington Beach and at the first KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Series, held at Dairy Beach.
Morgan Petit, SLC secretary, said the club was extremely proud of the men’s performance at Dairy Beach, under experienced coach Siya Shezi. “Ayanda Mthimkhulu won gold for sprints in the master category, while Matthew Rorke, club captain, won silver for sprints in the senior category. Jethro Alexandre won silver for sprints in the junior category and a big thank-you goes out to coach Shezi!” The senior team were not the only members showing dominance out at sea. At the KZN Nippers Championships U13-U14, Tyne Van Achtenberg dominated his age group winning all sea events including surf swim, run-swim-run, boards and iron nippers. Van Achtenberg placed third in sprints, seventh at flags and fifth in long-run and was ultimately awarded Competitor of Champs U14.
“Grace Moussouris and Abbey Jones also competed at the Nipper U14 Champs and did very well. Moussouris placed ninth in long-run and tenth in run-swim-run while Jones placed tenth in boards. Well done to Grace on her first paddle board around the can, and well wishes go to Tyne representing KZN at inter-provincial champs soon!” Griffin Harris and Haylie Leroux, who competed in the KZN Nippers Championship U11-U12, equally did well. Harris won gold for sprints and Leroux took third for bodyboard. “It was a massive effort from everyone and they all did extremely well given the little bit of training that they had done. A huge well done!” Active duty members at SLC will be looking forward to the second, upcoming Scottburgh Legend Challenge where events including beach relay, board relay, surf swim and flags will test the club’s best.
