As police probe the murder of beloved Amanzimtoti pastoress, Reverend Liezel de Jager, the plot thickened when her husband, Werner de Jager, was reported missing on Sunday, 24 October, and was allegedly found disoriented, inside his vehicle on a sugar plantation in Illovo by a local farmer, on Wednesday.
First responders, Emer-G-Med paramedics, confirmed the discovery of de Jager. Emer-G-Med spokesperson, Kyle Van Reenen, said their paramedics were called to a sugarcane plantation in Ilovo South, by ET Rapid Response, after a farmer discovered a vehicle on his farm.
“Further investigation by security officers found a man seated in the vehicle in a serious condition. Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to the scene and stabilised him before he was airlifted with the assistance of the Netcare911 aeromedical helicopter, to a nearby specialist facility for further care.
According to reports, de Jager was last seen by his father-in-law, Henk van Zyl, on Sunday morning who later reported the father of two missing. A pastoress at the NG Kerk Suidkus, Liezel s body was discovered next to her house by her husband, Werner.
She had returned from a morning jog and was found with strangulation marks on her neck.
Media reports indicate that the beloved reverend s throat had been slit and a bent toy spade was found near her head.
It was further alleged that her two daughters were inside the house when de Jager made the discovery of his wife s body. Further revelations cited in the media allege that the home s panic button was activated at 6.02am and was canceled with the security company by de Jager who provided the correct code. There are other claims that de Jager called the security company back a short while later in a hysterical state saying that his wife was attacked in their yard and she looked dead. Investigations continue.
