It was a high-paced action scene that played out on the N2 between uMhlanga and Sibaya Casino when a gunman opened fire with a high calibre rifle on two men in a Toyota Quantum taxi, on Tuesday morning.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were dispatched to the scene at approximately 10.07am after receiving a call from a passerby reporting the shooting.
Rusa boss, Prem Balram, said: “On arrival, Reaction Officers located the taxi in the centre median. The occupants were not in the vehicle, however, after a brief search the two were located on the south-bound lane.
The driver explained that he and a friend were traveling to Mandini, north of Durban, when a white Toyota Quantum drove up alongside him. He noticed the sliding door open and a man who was armed with a rifle opened fire on his vehicle. He swerved and drove into the centre median after one bullet shattered a rear window on the driver’s side.”
The motive for the shooting has not been established at this stage.
