Acaciavale Primary School’s Grade 7 learners, NonJabulo Thwala, Bulelwa Mlotshwa, Vidaan Dwarika, Ziyanda Hlatshwayo, Alusa Mlambo and Senzokuhle Shabalala, proudly lift the South African flag above their heads to show their gratitude to the learners, students and youth who fought and died for their human rights during the Soweto Uprising in 1976.
“It is because of these sacrifices that the youth of today can have the rights to build and work towards a better, brighter and stronger South Africa,” said the learners from APS. This Thursday, 16 June, marks the commemoration of National Youth Day in South Africa. This is the day the country and its youth reflect on the massacre of school children on 16 June 1976. This uprising that began in Soweto, and spread countrywide, profoundly charted the socio-political landscape of South Africa.
