Police are investigating a case of murder after an off-duty member of Phoenix SAPS, Sergeant Qinisani Wonderboy Tshangwe, was gunned down in his home during a suspected house robbery in Quarry Heights on Thursday, 24 August.
According to reports from a reliable source within SAPS, a complaint was received from radio control about a shooting incident in Quarry Heights at approximately 11.50pm on Thursday, 24 August. The source said upon arrival at the scene, members were approached by the girlfriend of the deceased, who showed them where the Sgt Tshangwe was lying inside the house.
“It is alleged that the deceased, Sgt Tshangwe, his girlfriend and another male friend were in the lounge of his house when two unknown black males approached them and demanded money and the firearm of Sgt Tshangwe. The suspects took the deceased to his bedroom where he was shot five times on the left side of his upper body and abdomen. The suspects took three cellphones belonging to the three victims. The deceased was found in a sitting position leaning on his bed. His firearm was not taken. The suspects fled on foot in an unknown direction. Nine cartridges, one projectile and one fragment were found on scene. Sgt Tshangwe passed away due to the severity of his gunshot wounds. The suspects are unknown and no arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing,” the source said.
Phoenix Community Policing Forum PRO, Mark Nadasen said that the police officer’s brutal shooting is an alarming wake up call to all as it places emphasis on the fact that none of us are exempt from becoming victims of crime, not even individuals who protect us.
“It is sad to see that criminals are now targeting police officers that assist our community to fight crime. The Community Policing Forum will not condone these acts of crimes. We will work together with members of the community and SAPS to ensure that criminals like these are brought to justice immediately. The Phoenix CPF together with the SAPS and security companies embarked on a “Our lives matter” motorcade just about a month ago informing our community of all our crime fighters lives being lost. On behalf of the Phoenix CPF, I would like extend our condolences to the bereaved family of the police officer. May God be with you and provide you with the strength you need during this difficult time,” said Nadasen.
Facebook has since been flooded with messages of condolences for the late policeman. “Rest in peace. Very sad that one of our men in blue has passed away so cruelly,” said Vinotha Archary Reddy. Kevin Singh posted: “RIP my friend. My deepest sympathy to the family. It was sad to see a member last night and how these criminals have no fear to kill a police member.”
