Michael Jonathan is South Africa’s very own Michael Jackson impersonator and has performed in packed venues throughout the country, setting the stage alight with his dance moves. Michael, who is also a husband and dad, shared a cuppa coffee with the Newcastle Express to give readers a glimpse into his life.

Newcastle Express (NE): What made you become a Michael Jackson impersonator?

Michael Jonathan (MJ): I love the way Michael Jackson performed and he had the most incredible stage presence.

NE: Tell us more about yourself and your career as a tribute artist.

MJ: I am originally from France and moved to South Africa 13 years ago. I have been performing as a Michael Jackson tribute artist for 12 years now. It is something that I have always wanted to do. I became a professional artist in 2007.

NE: How old were you when you first began dancing?

MJ: I was about three years old when I started learning Michael Jackson’s dance moves, and I have been performing his routines for most of my life.

NE: What is your favourite song of his?

MJ: Billie Jean is my favourite to perform.

NE: How did you feel when you learned of Michael Jackson’s passing in 2009?

MJ: When I learned about the news of his death, it felt as if another part of me was gone too. It was the worst day of my life. I cried like a baby and it took me a long time to get back on stage.

NE: Where do you get all your outfits?

MJ: My team makes most of the outfits that I wear during performances. I work together with my wife and a designer to come up with outfits which capture the legendary ‘Michael Jackson’ look.

NE: Where have you performed and have you won any awards?

MJ: It is the second time this year that I am being awarded by Big M Productions for the Influential Women and Artes. My work has been recognised as that of value and as a great entertainer. In 2008, I was awarded the Best Artist by E Production at the State Theatre in Pretoria where I did my art studies.

NE: What are your future plans?

MJ: My main plans are to try to make the world a better place, to help those in need – something which I have been doing for a number of years now. I also want to keep introducing love and harmony through my shows and, of course, create more opportunities for other artists.

NE: Tell us more about your family.

MJ: I am married to Aimee Jane Jonathan and I have a daughter named Michaela Jane Jonathan.

NE: Favourite destination?

MJ: I have many because I love to travel the world, but in South Africa I would have to say Durban and, of course, to be on stage in front of my screaming fans is always my favourite destination.

NE: Favourite food?

MJ: Salad

NE: How can readers find you on social media?
