A Northlands Girls’ High School matriculant, Bianca Thandroyen, was caught in a drive-by shooting that left her dead in Pickering Street, Durban CBD on Saturday, 12 June.
Four Thandroyen family members Bianca, Craig, Bredon and a 13-year-old Carel were travelling in a white Golf 7 when they were shot by unknown gunmen. Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said charges of murder and attempted murder are being investigated by Point SAPS. She claimed that the four people were in a vehicle when they were shot by unknown suspects who were travelling in another vehicle. “Two people were declared dead at the scene while the other died in hospital. The other victim sustained injuries. The matter is still under investigation,” said Mbele.
Shawn Herbst, spokesperson for Netcare 911, said two adult males (Craig and Bredon) in the front seats were assessed and found to have sustained fatal injuries and declared deceased on the scene. “The minor female (Bianca) had sustained critical injuries and was rushed to hospital. The minor male (Carel) had sustained serious injuries and was stabilised on-scene before being transported to hospital for further care,” said Herbst. While rushed to hospital, Biaca lost the battle. Northlands Girls’ High School acknowledged the passing and sent condolences on their school Facebook page. “We are saddened by the loss of matric learner, Bianca Thandroyen. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this difficult time. May she rest in peace.” The SAPS are appealing to the members of the community to refrain from taking and sharing pictures and videos of the deceased person. Mbele added that this is causing a trauma and heartache to the families of the victims.
