A significant new initiative to bolster gender-based violence (GBV) awareness and support victims in effectively navigating the legal system is being launched, spearheaded by local NGO Sinika Uthando in partnership with Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (WRSETA).
The programme which is set to culminate on Women’s Day, 9 August aims to directly empower 500 beneficiaries, with Sinika Uthando committed to match-funding to reach an additional 500 individuals.
At the recent launch announcing the project, Jennifer Chetty, founding director of Sinika Uthando said: “We mark a pivotal moment in our journey. Project Bambalela, meaning ‘hold on’ or ‘persevere’ in isiZulu, is not just another initiative, it is our flagship programme.

“This name was chosen with deliberate intent, for it encapsulates the spirit of resilience we aim to foster in every single one of our recipients that Project Bambalela is designed to serve. This is not just another initiative for Sinika Uthando, it is our most ambitious, comprehensive, and vital undertaking to date. It is our flagship programme because it addresses the very core of the injustices that plague our communities and devastate lives.
“Whilst WRSETA has generously committed to funding 500 targeted beneficiaries, our NGO will match these funds to support a further 500 individuals, ensuring that even more people receive this vital assistance.”
In a swift and impactful contribution, MRP Money has come on board with a significant sponsorship. The company has provided SIM starter packs, pre-loaded with 15GB of data each, for all beneficiaries. This initiative aims to equip individuals with a reliable means of emergency contact should they find themselves in dangerous situations.
Philani Zondo from WRSETA highlighted the broader vision for such programme: “There is a pressing need for more programmes like this to be initiated, with a strong focus on developing skills alongside awareness, emphasising the empowering nature of the initiative beyond immediate crisis support.
“The comprehensive programme is designed to provide beneficiaries with the knowledge and resources to understand their rights and the legal avenues available to them in cases of GBV. The focus on skills development suggests a holistic approach to empowering individuals affected by such issues.”
The collaboration between Sinika Uthando, the WRSETA, a key player in skills development, and MRP Money, a socially responsible corporate entity, the department of justice and legal experts signifies a multi-sectoral approach to tackling the pervasive issue of GBV in the country.
The programme began which began on 2 June will be eagerly anticipated as a positive step towards creating a more informed and supportive environment for victims of GBV.
