In a moving ceremony filled with cultural pride, the Mount Edgecombe and Estates Community Association held its annual Lifetime Achievement and Legacy Awards. The event, which celebrated “unsung heroes” and community stalwarts, took place on Friday, August 2, at the Shri Mariammen Temple Hall in Mount Edgecombe.
The awards paid tribute to individuals whose dedication has shaped the region. The theme for this year’s event, ‘Simple people made special,’ highlighted individuals from various fields, including education, sports, cultural preservation, and social development. Special tributes were given to senior citizens over 80, and posthumous awards were presented to honour the legacies of those who have passed away.
Patchie Naicker, the ceremony’s chairperson, described the event as a celebration of the past and present, saying: “Triumph over oppression resonates deeply, especially when framed through the lens of the sugarcane cutter: a symbol of endurance, dignity, and quiet revolution. The list of awardees is truly impressive, celebrating both long-standing community members and those who have recently contributed. It’s especially heartwarming to see the oldest resident, Thara Druga at 101, being honoured, alongside retired educators like Eric Rungappa and Selvi Applesamy. Recognizing current principals Dean Achary and Jennifer Naidoo shows a focus on both past and present leaders in the community.”
Naicker also noted the diverse talent within the community, citing the inclusion of sports champions like the Arjoon brothers in darts and angling champion Roy Naidoo. He added that the posthumous awards were a beautiful way to honour the legacy of those who are no longer with them. Naicker said: “The recognition of Thamanthree Naicker for her athletic achievements, Parker Narainsamy for his contributions to culture and art, and Ganas Govender as a cultural advocate speaks to the deep roots and rich history of the community. With over 180 awards presented, it was a truly memorable afternoon filled with heartfelt tributes and a strong sense of community pride.”
The afternoon included musical performances, heartfelt speeches, and moments of reflection that highlighted the importance of recognising those who uplift others without seeking the spotlight.
The following organisations were also recognised for their service: Natest Primary School, Shri Mariammen Temple society, Shri Emperumal Hindu Temple Society, ACT Church, Workshop 84, Friends without Borders, Mount Edgecombe Hotel, Mount Edgecombe Hairdressers, and Mamojees Ebhramin and Sons.
