In partnership with Phoenix Child Welfare (PCW), South African musician VERD held a fundraising concert to combat domestic violence and child abuse. The event took place on Friday, 25 July, at the Grace Outreach International Ministries, with all funds going to the Phoenix Children’s Home and The Sahara Shelter—both managed by the PCW.
Aroona Chetty, the PCW director, described the concert as more than just entertainment; it was a powerful statement of solidarity with survivors. “Domestic violence and child abuse remain serious challenges in South Africa, often leaving lasting trauma on individuals and families. The Sahara Shelter provides refuge and support for women and children affected by abuse, while the Phoenix Child Welfare Children’s Home offers a safe haven and essential care for vulnerable children. Events like this concert play a crucial role in ensuring these services can continue making a difference.”
The PCW extended its heartfelt thanks to Pastor Emile Munien and the Grace Outreach International Ministries for their generous partnership, which was “invaluable to its success.” A special thank you was also given to VERD, who performed at a minimum cost, demonstrating his commitment to social issues. His performance highlighted his musical talent and “his deep personal commitment to social issues, especially gender-based violence.”
The evening was made possible by the voluntary contributions of many community members and organisations. Adeline Hill served as the programme director, while the Resurrected Dance Academy entertained the audience with a vibrant performance. Pupils Raheem Arshad and Kamryn Naicker from Northmead Secondary School also offered prayers.
Chetty thanked Gregory’s Driving School for sponsoring six learner licence packages, each valued at R850, as prizes. She also acknowledged Afrokwazi for donating braai utensils and the volunteers who ran the braai. “Sealan Security ensured the safety of all attendees at no cost, a gesture deeply appreciated by all.”
The concert’s success demonstrated the power of collective community action in tackling societal challenges. Through music, dance, and unity, the Phoenix community raised both funds and awareness, offering hope and support to those who need it most.
