Few runners can say they experienced the Comrades Marathon long before they ever stood on its start line. For Durban’s Sifiso Mngoma, the world’s most famous ultra-marathon was first a workplace, then a community, and ultimately a personal challenge that transformed him into a runner.

His journey with Comrades started as a volunteer in the Green Number hospitality programme before progressing to the Race Organising Committee and later serving as a Marketing Coordinator for the Comrades Marathon Association. It was there, surrounded by thousands of runners and their stories of perseverance, that the seed was planted.

“My journey as a social runner started through my connection with the Comrades Marathon. Being surrounded by the energy, discipline and inspiring stories of runners naturally drew me closer to the sport. I made a silly promise to lots of runners while I was serving the Comrades Marathon that when I leave the Comrades Marathon Association, I will come back a runner. So, I had to honour that promise.”

Runner, marketer and Comrades enthusiast, Sifiso Mngoma continues to embrace the road ahead.

Today, running has become far more than a pastime for him. It is a lifestyle that shapes his weekends, fuels his wellbeing and connects him to a thriving community of like-minded individuals. While his professional life unfolds in the fast-paced world of retail marketing and brand activations, the road offers balance, perspective and purpose. Mngoma said that one of the greatest rewards of running is the sense of belonging it creates.

“What keeps me coming back to the running community is the genuine sense of connection and support that exists within it. Running has a unique way of bringing people together regardless of background, profession or experience level,” the runner said.

He is quick to acknowledge the role played by local running groups such as Izitebele and Vuka Morning Run, communities that continue to inspire runners to show up, push forward and support one another. Like the marathon itself, Mngoma’s approach to running is grounded in consistency rather than instant gratification. It is a lesson that has influenced every aspect of his life.

“Running has taught me that discipline and consistency are built through the small actions you commit to every day, not only during the big moments,” he said.

That philosophy mirrors the approach he takes in his career. As a marketing professional, Mngoma believes success is achieved through preparation, patience and sustained effort, qualities that are equally essential on the road.

“Marketing and running are actually very similar in many ways. Both require consistency, discipline, preparation and the ability to stay focused on long-term goals even when results are not immediate.”

Yet despite the many kilometres he has covered, one memory remains unmatched.
“My best race experience was my first Comrades Marathon last year. It humbled me, but at the same time it showed me how strong I am when I put my mind to something.”
The experience affirmed what he had witnessed for years from the sidelines: “that Comrades is as much a test of character as it is of physical endurance.”

Away from race day, Mngoma finds joy in the simple rituals that accompany a runner’s life. Early morning runs through Morningside remain among his favourite experiences, particularly when the sun rises over the Indian Ocean and the city begins to stir. Weekends are reserved for long runs, recovery and church, a routine that reflects the discipline underpinning his journey.

As Mr Price ambassador at this year’s Comrades Marathon, Mngoma continues to represent a race that has played a defining role in his life. From volunteer to organiser, marketer to runner, his story reflects the unique power of the Comrades Marathon to inspire, transform and unite. And while medals and finish times are celebrated milestones, they are not what matters most to him. Mngoma hopes people remember something far simpler: how he makes them feel.

For a runner whose journey began by inspiring others from behind the scenes and evolved into becoming one of them, it is a fitting legacy to pursue, one kilometre at a time.
