Instead of shrinking, the number of Malawian nationals at Durban’s Old Drive-In repatriation site continues to increase as the 30 June march against undocumented foreign nationals draws closer.
Although repatriation efforts remain underway, more Malawians continue arriving at the site daily, hoping to return home before the end of the month.
Media are still not being allowed inside the camp. However, from outside the fenced site, it is evident that registration and processing of those awaiting repatriation are continuing.
Several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were seen arriving throughout the day to deliver food, water and other essential supplies to those staying at the camp.
Some of the Malawian nationals waiting outside the site said they were eager to leave South Africa before 30 June, fearing uncertainty surrounding the planned march against undocumented foreign nationals.
“We just want to go home before 30 June,” one man said, echoing the concerns of many others waiting to be repatriated.
