As tensions continue to mount ahead of 30 June, the North Beach Community Policing Forum (CPF) has appealed for calm, saying comprehensive security plans are in place despite permission for the planned march against undocumented foreign nationals being declined.

The CPF said while the march had not been authorised, it acknowledged that some individuals or groups may still attempt to gather. It added that it had received assurances from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other law enforcement agencies that detailed operational plans were in place to safeguard communities, maintain public order and respond to any incidents.

Ward 26 PR councillor Sharmaine Sewshanker said residents were living in fear as there had been little communication from SAPS on how the situation would be managed.
She said community members were concerned that if the march proceeded despite not being approved, undocumented foreign nationals accommodated at the Old Drive-In repatriation site could flee into nearby residential areas. She added that residents also feared being caught up in any stampede or unrest should large crowds gather.

Sewshanker further said the eThekwini Mayor had previously indicated that the Malawian nationals would remain at the North Beach site for two weeks. However, with large numbers of people continuing to arrive at the camp, she feared the situation could deteriorate by Tuesday if the repatriation process was delayed.

The North Beach CPF said it would remain actively deployed alongside SAPS, law enforcement agencies and private security companies in a coordinated effort to ensure the safety and security of the North Beach precinct.

The forum urged residents, businesses and visitors to remain calm, avoid any form of vigilantism and report suspicious activity or criminal incidents to SAPS or the relevant authorities.

“Our message is clear: safety is a shared responsibility. Let us work together, support law enforcement and ensure that North Beach remains a safe and secure community,” the CPF said.
