Alfred Duma Municipal Mayor, Councillor Zama Sibisi, and other officials joined members of the Ladysmith Police and Public Safety officers on a Festive Season Road Safety Awareness Campaign, which was held along the N11. The programme aimed to prioritise and promote safer road usage during the high peak season.
The objective of the campaign is not only to ensure smooth flows of traffic but also to prevent negligent and reckless driving which could result in road crashes, injuries, and fatalities. This programme was implemented through intergovernmental relations and collaboration between different levels of government, transport authorities, SAPS and other stakeholders.
Officials on site conducted routine inspections such as vehicle verification, outstanding fines/warrants, licence disks and roadworthiness of vehicles based on the fact that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
“Our message is very clear, the festive season activities are associated with year-end celebrations, economic industry slowdowns and year-end closures, increased traffic volumes and increased road crash incidents. The aim is to ensure that motorists and passengers are safe. We do not want unnecessary accidents. We appeal for compliance and caution. Do not drink and drive. Arrive alive,” said Mayor Sibisi during the campaign.
