Combat athletes of all ages from the Isipingo Martial Arts Club recently participated in a Kata Forms Tournament held in Umkubaan Community Hall.
This was the first major event for the club which had been limited in mass gatherings due to the rules and regulations of the Covid-19 lockdown. Sensei Seggie Murugan, head of the dojo, said the over 40-year-old club had been through tough times but was finally back on track. “Our students who participated in the kata tournament did exceptionally well. A big thank- you to Sensei Fiona and Sensei Ally as well as the club secretary for officiating. Our awards ceremony, held a few days before, was also well received as we thanked parents and students for their ongoing commitment during lockdown and observance of Covid-19 protocols.”
As an affiliate of Full Contact Martial Arts (FCMA), under chief instructor and seventh Dan Black Shihan Razak Ally, the club aims to expose their pupils to an array of combat techniques, with karate being the focus. “Many of our athletes have provincial and national colours, which always helps to inspire fellow members of the club. We encourage school governing bodies and learners to join in on this fantastic lifestyle that produces a healthy mind and body,” Murugan said. The club operates from Lotus Park Community Hall where 26 students, aged five and upwards, practise their sport diligently on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 4.30pm to 6pm. “We have a full calendar year, subject to change, depending on Covid-19 regulations, but are otherwise looking forward to normality returning.” To join or for more information about the martial arts club email muruganseggie@gmail.com or contact Sensei Seggie on 083 640 7774.
