The Montford Shopping Centre came to a standstill on Sunday afternoon, 12 March, when the sound of a single gunshot radiated through the centre, taking the life of 33-year-old Giovanni ‘Geez’ Govender who was shot in the chest and was unfortunately declared deceased at the scene.
“Amawele Emergency Services were called out to the Montford Shopping Centre by members of the public regarding a shooting. Our accident response unit arrived at the scene with other medical services to find an Indian male in his 30s with a single gunshot wound towards the left side of his chest.
“Sadly, the victim had no signs of life and was declared dead on scene. We send our condolences to his family for the loss of their son,” said paramedic, Claude Subramodey, one of the emergency personnel at the scene.
A passersby, who wished to remain anonymous, said that it was traumatic to see such a scene unfold at the shopping centre. She said: “It all actually happened so fast. All we heard was the gunshot and saw someone fall to the ground. After talking to more people, we believe that this was the fatal result of a scuffle.
“It is unfortunate that this had to happen and more especially in such a public place where there are shoppers and children. The person who did this did not even think of the consequences of his actions. I pray that the deceased’s family gathers the courage and strength to fight for justice for this man whose life was unfairly cut short. May his soul rest in peace.”
A case of murder is being investigated by SAPS Chatsworth. Captain Cheryl Pillay, communications officer for SAPS Chatsworth, said: “On 12 March, at approximately 15h00, a shooting occurred at the Montford Shopping Centre where an Indian male (33) was discovered with a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Police have intensified investigations in search of the suspect. The motive for the murder is unknown. SAPS Chatsworth is investigating a case of murder.”
Govender’s mother-in-law, Suraiya Hoosen, said that their families want justice to be served.
“He was a bubbly, humble and very respectful man. He resided in Moorton and was employed as a shipping coordinator. Giovanni was the youngest of seven siblings, four brothers and three sisters. We just want justice to be served and his murderer to be arrested as soon as possible. We encourage anyone with information that can help to step forward,” she said.
“On Monday, 13 March, a 62-year-old suspect handed himself over to SAPS Chatsworth where he remains in police custody. The accused will appear at the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court in due course on charges of murder and theft of a firearm,” said Capt Pillay.
