A brazen cash-in-transit heist unfolded on the N2 highway near the KwaMashu off-ramp on Friday evening. A gang of heavily armed suspects intercepted a cash-in-transit van, accosting the security officers and fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.
According to eyewitnesses, multiple gunshots and explosions were heard during the incident. KZNVIP Protection Services responded to the scene, with spokesperson Gareth Naidoo stating that approximately 12 heavily armed suspects, travelling in a white Toyota Hilux and a white Toyota Corolla Cross, executed a coordinated attack on the CIT vehicle.
“The suspects disarmed the security officers on duty and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash,” Naidoo said. KZNVIP Emergency Response Teams arrived swiftly, securing the area and providing support to the affected security personnel, who fortunately sustained no physical injuries.
However, ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, reported that two guards had sustained minor injuries and were treated on the scene. “Paramedics arrived on the scene to find SAPS already in attendance with the entire southbound carriageway closed. Paramedics found that a cash vehicle had been blown up by unknown suspects,” Jamieson said.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, confirmed the incident, stating that police in KwaZulu-Natal are on the lookout for an unknown number of suspects. “The suspects forced the cash vehicle to stop and robbed three security guards of their firearms before stealing an undisclosed amount of money from the vehicle,” Col Netshiunda added.
