Residents have called for justice for people with disabilities after a recent home invasion left a man critically injured. The incident took place at Grove End, Phoenix, on Thursday afternoon, 22 May around 12 pm. The victim, Naresh Sewchuran, 48, was allegedly attacked by a teenager while having tea.
His sister, Nirashni Sewchuran, shared that despite her brother’s mental challenges, he is a kind and gentle soul. Speaking on the incident, she said: “My brother was preparing tea, when he was surprised by a teenager who had jumped the wall. He was overwhelmed and overpowered by the teenager and taken to his room, where he was restrained with a belt and beaten. The suspect searched his room and took some clothes, shoes and phones. He then ran off and as my brother made his way outside. Our neighbour saw his condition and assisted him.”
On Thursday, the KZN VIP Emergency Response Team reported that a mentally challenged man was left critically injured following a violent home invasion. Spokesperson, Gareth Naidoo, said: “The suspect, believed to be a known robbery suspect from the area, fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of stolen valuables after the attack. Members of the KZN VIP Emergency Response Team were immediately dispatched following reports of the invasion. Upon arrival, responders found the victim in a critical condition and requested urgent medical assistance. KZN VIP Ambulance Services transported the severely injured man to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.”
Naidoo added that the South African Police Service (SAPS) had been notified and were currently investigating the matter. No arrests have been made at this time, and authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
