The countdown has officially begun for one of the most prestigious events on the South African karate calendar, as the International Federation of Funakoshi Shotokan Karate (IFFSK) prepares to host the highly anticipated 42nd National Funakoshi Cup Championship. The championship will take place on 28 and 29 August at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Sports Centre.
The championship is expected to attract karate practitioners, officials, coaches, families and supporters from across the country, with all IFFSK affiliates set to converge in KwaZulu-Natal for what promises to be one of the largest and most prestigious karate events hosted by the organisation. Competitors will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of events, including individual kata, individual kumite, team kata, team kumite and Kubodo, ensuring a complete display of technical ability, teamwork, strategy and martial arts excellence.
The inclusion of team kata and team kumite will bring an additional dimension of excitement to the championship, highlighting the importance of unity, timing, discipline and collaboration between athletes. Organisers said these events will showcase the strength and depth of IFFSK’s affiliated dojos as teams compete for national recognition and championship honours. The Kubodo divisions will further demonstrate the versatility and traditional values of martial arts, allowing competitors to showcase their skill, control, precision and understanding of traditional weapon techniques.
