The principal, staff and learners of Trubel Primary School in Tongaat held a clean up campaign on Thursday, as part of an initiative to promote a cleaner and healthier living environment for the community.

Together with Durban Solid Waste (DSW), the principal of Trubel Primary sent out a call to all local schools and residents to participate in the clean-up. Armed with refuse bags and gloves provided by DSW, the learners spent many hours cleaning up inside and outside of their school premises.

The school principal, Guru Ramcharan said the clean-up was a good initiative as the state of Belvedere, and Tongaat as a whole, is in utter chaos. He said: “There is refuse dumped everywhere, on pavements, playgrounds, outside homes and it is very unhygienic for our children to grow up in. We decided enough is enough, we had to clean up and make a difference to our community, in the hope that the learners will take the experience home and encourage their parents to do the same.”

The programme was a massive success with many schools joining the campaign. The staff and learners of Trubel Primary were joined by their peers from Tongaat Secondary, Flambel Primary, Silverdale Primary, Emona Primary, Sanfields Primary, Sarasvati Primary and Fairbreeze Primary schools.

They were also joined by the residents of Tongaat who were puffed up with pride. “I was please to see the children so enthusiastic about taking care of the environment, my wish is for each and every citizen to join the ranks of those who care for their society, just to clean up the spaces in and around their own homes, if they do just that then they have made the greatest difference. Do not throw refuse out of your cars, rather keep it with you until you reach home and safely dispose of them. Keep all your refuse from home in your bins until DSW collects it. It will protect the environment and keep our children and pets safe,” said Mr Ramcharan.

He extended his gratitude to all those involved in the clean up. “A big thank you to all those who participated and heeded our call to keep Belvedere and Tongaat beautiful,” he added.
