In a continued effort to raise awareness and empower young minds about opportunities in the green economy and sustainable development, the 10th Annual Green Youth Indaba took place at the Durban ICC on Thursday, 19 and Friday, 20 June 2025. Hosted by the Green Youth Network, the event brought together aspiring innovators, government representatives, and key industry stakeholders.
Delegates and attendees were officially welcomed by eThekwini Councillor Ntando Khuzwayo, who reaffirmed the city’s commitment to youth empowerment and sustainable development. His remarks set the tone for an inspiring and action-driven two-day gathering.
The event featured a distinguished delegation that included officials, ministers, and MECs, all present to witness the potential and creativity of South Africa’s youth. Representing the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Mmboneni Muofhe delivered a message of support, emphasising the importance of unlocking youth potential through science and innovation.
Reverend Musa Zondi, MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, addressed the audience on the government’s efforts to collaborate with youth in unlocking green jobs and creating employment strategies within the environmental sector. His presentation was followed by a keynote address from Narend Singh, Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, who spoke on advancing youth participation in the green economy. Singh highlighted the critical role that young people play in driving sustainable solutions to environmental challenges, stressing that meaningful change must include the ideas and energy of the next generation.
The Indaba also featured a range of vibrant and informative exhibitions. Exhibitors presented dynamic displays and interactive showcases, all focused on furthering the green economy. These exhibits offered attendees real-world insights into sustainable practices and innovation.
Young participants also engaged in several thought-provoking panel discussions. Topics explored included access to finance and support for youth in the green economy, the intersection between the circular economy and township development, local solutions to global challenges, the role of youth in building climate resilience, and innovative approaches to waste management and revenue generation through recycling.
Day two of the event featured the Green Innovators Pre-Pitch, an exciting platform where youth were given the opportunity to present their innovative ideas. One standout presentation came from Kemiso Motholo, who introduced his concept for an energy metering system designed to enable real-time monitoring of electricity usage by power utilities. Motholo explained that the system includes a smart prepaid electric meter box equipped with sensors linked to a central system and a mobile app. When tampering occurs, the meter sends a signal to the central system to alert authorities. Users, through the app, can track electricity consumption per appliance, manage their usage, and load vouchers—all in real time.
This innovation, like many others showcased at the Indaba, demonstrated the ingenuity and passion that young South Africans are bringing to the green economy.
The 10th edition of the Green Youth Indaba was hailed as a resounding success. Organisers extended their gratitude to all attendees, partners, and participants who made the event possible and reaffirmed their commitment to nurturing a generation of environmentally conscious and empowered leaders.
