The incitement to commit public violence case against Fees Must Fall activist, Bonginkosi Khanyile, 31, has been moved to the Durban Regional Court.

Khanyile briefly appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 23 September, as he faces charges of incitement to commit public violence as well as Contravention of the Disaster Management Act. He was arrested a month ago by the Hawks at his student residence at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg for allegedly inciting public violence linked to the #FreeJacobZuma campaign and the unrests that broke out in July.

KZN Director of Public Prosecutions spokesperson, Natasha Kara said the matter will be heard at the Durban Regional Court on 22 October for Khanyile’s first appearance in the regional court. Speaking to the Springfield Weekly Gazette after his court appearance, Khanyile said he feels good after the appearance. “I am still confident, even though the case has been moved to the regional court, I will prove and demonstrate my innocence there. I will also prove that this case is fabricated and that I have nothing to do with the unrest. I am just a low hanging fruit for the state to pursue me. We will go to the regional court in force to prove my innocence. I am a peace loving person and believe in the prosperity of all Africans in our motherland,” said Khanyile.
