
A Hillcrest police sergeant was shot dead while he was walking to his car after he had visited a friend in Patna Road in Botha’s Hill, on Monday, 17 May. Sergeant Bradley Smith had been serving the community in the police force for more than a decade.
He has been described as a dedicated policeman. Hilcrest SAPS communications officer, Captain Linzi Smith said police were called to the scene at about 7pm and upon arrival found that one of their own station members, sergeant E B Smith was shot and killed by unknown assailants whilst he was off duty. “Sgt Bradley Smith will be sorely missed. Our condolences go out to all his family, friends and the members of Hillcrest Police Station,” said Cpt Smith. Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst said paramedics responded to a shooting where a male police official had been gunned down while walking to his car after he had visited a friend. “The patient who was found unresponsive on the floor was assessed by medics and found to have sustained fatal injuries and sadly declared deceased on the scene. Circumstances leading up to the shooting are being investigated by the relevant authorities,” said Herbst. Cpt Smith said a case of murder has being opened and is currently under investigation. “We are pleading to any persons who have any information to come forward. All information received can and will remain anonymous,” Smith said. Hawks spokesperson, Simphiwe Mhlongo said: “No arrests have been made so far, however, investigations are continuing.”
