A 19-year-old suspect is in custody following his arrest by Hawks members from Durban Serious Organised Crime unit, on Thursday, after his brutal and deadly attack on an off-duty police officer, in Inanda.
Hawks spokesperson, Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo, said: “On Sunday, 7 February, an off-duty police official, Constable Sizwe Mthethwa stationed at Inanda police station was allegedly stabbed and killed by the suspect. Two victims were also stabbed during the incident and were taken to hospital for medical attention. The suspects allegedly stole the deceased’s cellphones. It is alleged that Mthethwa was on his way to the suspect’s home to meet with the parents after a fight occurred between the suspect and Mthethwa’s stepson. However, the suspect allegedly attacked them with a sharp object.”
Cpt Mhlonga said a case of murder, attempted murder and theft was reported at Inanda police station and the case docket was allocated to Hawks members for intensive investigation. “Members worked tirelessly and as a result the suspect was traced and arrested,” added Mhlonga.
The suspect will appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court.
