Rusa members tracked a blood trail from a pathway to the Phoenix Highway

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) worked swiftly to locate a shot suspect at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital after he was alleged to have been one of two involved in a robbery in Phoenix, on Tuesday. At approximately 5.45pm, members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) received a circulation of an armed robbery and shooting on the Ottawa Old Main Road in the vicinity of Woodview, Phoenix.

Rusa head, Prem Balram, said: “Available Reaction Officers converged on the scene and met an off-duty security officer who explained that while walking towards the Phoenix Highway near Trade Centre he was accosted by two men who attempted to rob him. One of the robbers was armed with a pistol. The victim fought off his attackers and managed to draw his personal .38 Special Revolver. The man fired all five rounds from his firearm which resulted in both suspects fleeing into a dense bush. ”

Balram said a witness to the incident pointed Reaction Officers to an entrance of a bush where one of the suspects had fled. Officers entered the pathway and tracked a blood trail from the scene to Phoenix Highway, however, the suspects could not be located. “A passerby informed Rusa members on scene that he noticed a man with a blood-soaked vest walking towards the provincial hospital.

Rusa members kept observation on the shot suspect at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital and later handed him over to police

Reaction Officers proceeded to the hospital and located the suspect in the Trauma Centre. He was being treated by a nurse for a gunshot wound to his chest. Reaction Officers kept observation over the suspect and handed him over to the South African Police Service,” Balram added. He said that the victim was also transported to the hospital where he has positively identified the man as one of his attackers.
