With the auspicious holiday of Diwali upon us, celebrated on 4 November, followers of the Hindu religion are making final preparations to usher in light and love into their homes, symbolising their triumph over darkness.
As South Africa remains on alert level 1, a number of homes across the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast and the rest of the province will resemble a Bollywood movie, brightly decorated and alive with song and dance. Their homes will be filled with family and friends who will come together after a long time of not celebrating Diwali as one big unit.Umkomaas resident, Prea Naidoo, said that last year they did not celebrate as there was death in the family. However, this year, she said they want to celebrate love, life and family by showing gratitude and being able to be together once again with all Covid protocols being observed.
“We are a big family and like to come together, with people even driving down from Joburg. Although we are not going to go all out like previous years, we want to celebrate being together; our triumphs as a family. We pray those affected by Covid and the families who have lost loved ones, that your light will shine again.”
However, for those who seek a low key celebration, there are other forms of entertainment on offer with The Playhouse Company bringing Bollywood to you from the Nateshwar Dance Company in Bollywood Song and Dance.
The play pays homage to the wonderful tradition of the Indian cinema industry and culture. The production features Bollywood songs from the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s with popular hits from each era highlighted in various medleys.
As we approach the auspicious holiday, the management and staff of the South Coast Weekly Gazette would like to wish all our Hindu readers and advertisers a happy and safe Diwali.
